The Pumas’ Closet is an initiative that Mr. Emil Clemons, 7th grade Science teacher, implemented here at Plummer Middle School because he saw a need after the devastating ice storm in February.  His goal is to provide approximately 200-250 students with the essentials that they need to start their days; therefore, they will not have to worry if they are hygienically sound.   Depending on how this initiative is received by students, there are plans to expand. Each care package will include: 1) a toothbrush, 2) toothpaste, 3) a bar of soap and 4) deodorant and there will be personal sized hand sanitizer bottles available individually. He has started gathering materials for these care packages via donations and his own monetary offerings. He wants to see this movement grow because as an educator he wants to be there for his students; therefore, he feels educators should meet some of their essential needs as well. By next year, he  hopes to reach at least 500 students and continue to expand with the offering of other products, such as feminine products and possibly hair care products. Mr. Clemons said, “We can be a beacon of light for our students, where they not only hear that we care, but they see that we care, and this will just be a small portion of that outreach.” In the past few weeks, including students that were given belts, Pumas’ Closet has helped approximately 15 students. As teachers show the students the newsletter that explains the Pumas’ Closet program this week, he wants to see 30-40 more students go home with packages going into Spring Break. Clemons said, “Be the change that you want to see.”
